Coloured pencils and pencils “Made from Upcycled Wood” now bear the TÜV Rheinland environmental test mark

As the world’s first manufacturer, STAEDTLER has coloured pencils and pencils tested by TÜV Rheinland according to the criteria of the new “Green Product Mark Writing Instruments” certification. For certification with the “Green Product” label, TÜV Rheinland, one of the world’s leading testing providers, examines the entire life cycle of a product: from social standards in production to product safety and durability, right through to whether it can be recycled. The test mark is therefore one of the most demanding of its kind in the world.

"We are proud that our pencils and coloured pencils “Made from Upcycled Wood” are successively being certified with the Green Product Label of TÜV Rheinland for their top performance in the area of environmental friendliness and energy efficiency," says Britta Ender, Head of Group Communications and Brand at STAEDTLER. Pencil models 120, 183, 185, 187 and 188 are already certified. "Sustainability is not an empty promise at STAEDTLER, but a lived commitment. We continuously invest in optimising our manufacturing processes and products," comments Britta Ender.

Pencils "Made from Upcycled Wood" obtain TÜV certification

The proven “Green Product” label was expanded by TÜV Rheinland in 2023 to include writing instruments. “Made from Upcycled Wood” pencils and coloured pencils are the first writing instruments to be certified with the new “Green Product Mark Writing Instruments”. With the WOPEX technology (Wood Pencil Extrusion) developed in-house, STAEDTLER manufactures the “Made from Upcycled Wood” pencils from wood chips, which are produced as a waste product from sawing and planing processes in the wood industry. This wood comes from PEFC-certified, predominantly German forests (PEFC/04-31-1227). The wood chips are ground into wood flour and formed into granules into an endless pencil, which is cut into individual pencils. Thanks to their quality and breakage resistance, “Made from Upcycled Wood” pencils are particularly durable. They are produced using 100 percent green electricity in Germany, which keeps transport routes short and energy efficient.

Green Product based on internationally recognised standards

In principle, Green Product certification is based on four pillars: responsible handling of chemical ingredients, reusability and reuse of recycled materials, carbon footprint, and energy consumption and efficiency. It also requires compliance with all security requirements and corporate social responsibility reporting. The criteria are based on recognised standards, including ISO standards, guidelines from the US environmental agency EPA, and requirements from the ISEAL Alliance (International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labelling Alliance), a meta-governance system for sustainability initiatives and environmental accreditors. In addition, industry and product-specific tests have been developed by experts from TÜV Rheinland.

The "Green Product" label offers consumers and buyers guidance in their search for safe and environmentally friendly products. With the “Made from Upcycled Wood” certification for pencils and coloured pencils, STAEDTLER highlights one of its most important corporate principles: acting sustainably.
