Wall tattoo lettering made from FIMO soft

Wall tattoo lettering made from FIMO soft
45 min Easy

Whether words, sayings or quotes ... typography decor is all the rage.
People love to make decorative statements using wall tattoos in capital letters. With FIMO soft, you can craft the lettering for a wall tattoo of your own – in the size you want, with a text of your choice and in colours that match your home. As autumn approaches, characters in a wood-like finish are particularly effective and give rooms a cosy atmosphere when temperatures outdoors begin to drop. The birchwood appearance of these FIMO soft letters was both quick and easy to create using a FIMO accessoires texture sheet and white paint.

Step-by-step tutorial

To make one letter, mix 1 block of white FIMO soft with half a block of black FIMO soft. This is best done with the clay machine: Roll the white block of FIMO soft out to a sheet using the acrylic roller first and then the clay machine (setting 1). Do the same with the half block of FIMO soft in black. Place the white sheet on top of the black and roll them together through the clay machine to create a single sheet. Fold the sheet in half, roll it, fold it again and repeat the procedure until the black has blended completely with the white and you are left with an anthracite colour.

Tip: Always feed the sheet of clay through the clay machine with the fold at the bottom or side to avoid air pockets.

Place the sheet of FIMO soft on the baking paper. Moisten the ‚wood‘ texture sheet with a little water and place it on the sheet of FIMO soft. Rub over the texture sheet firmly with the acrylic roller to emboss the wood pattern in the modelling clay. Repeat the procedure until the entire sheet of FIMO soft is covered in the pattern. When positioning the texture sheet next to an area that‘s already been embossed, allow the edge of the texture sheet to overlap so that there is no gap between the patterns.

Print the letter templates out on paper and cut the individual characters out. Place a paper letter on the embossed sheet of FIMO soft and press on gently. The template then stays in place on the sheet of FIMO soft and does not require any additional fixing on. Holding the kitchen knife vertically, cut the letter out going around the outside of the paper template. Remove the surplus FIMO soft. Take the paper letter template off. Repeat the procedure for all of the letters, making the ‚P‘ and ‚S‘ twice. The left-over bits of FIMO soft can be reused - simply knead together, roll out and cut out more letters using the templates. Harden everything in the oven for 30 minutes at 110°C. Take out of the oven, remove the baking paper and allow to cool.

Next, cover the front and backs of the FIMO soft letters in white paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Tip: Would a different type of wood go better with your pine, beech, oak or cherrywood furniture? Make FIMO soft wall tattoo letters in colours to match your home. You could also create letters without a texture, i.e. with a smooth surface, or emboss them with other FIMO accessoires texture sheets. How about letters in a leather or crocodile look (texture sheet art. no. 8744 03)?

Sand some of the white paint off the front of the letters using a sanding sponge from the grind‘n polish set to make the wood texture below visible and to create a characteristic light/dark birchwood look. Varnish the front and back of the letters. The FIMO soft letters can now be stuck onto a wall, cupboard or mirror using double-sided sticky or construction tape.
