Additionally required:
watercolour paper A4 (300 g/m²), water container, paper towel, possibly hair dryers for quick drying of the paint
Tips:
- Painting with watercolour paints often requires a lot of water. To prevent the paper from warping and to ensure it absorbs the paint well, you need special watercolour paper with a weight of at least 300 g/m².
- Create small samples of mixed shades before painting. This makes painting easier later.
Preliminary exercise: “How to draw a fir tree”:
Before you venture out into nature, you can practice the first trees on extra paper. To do this, draw a vertical brush stroke with a fine round brush. Spread the paint slightly below the start of the line with zigzag movements on the left and right, evenly spreading the paint with the brush. After a small part, you can continue with the flat brush. Slowly widen the shape downwards.
Use the pencil to draw the mountains. Start with diagonal lines from the edge of the image that lead downwards. In the middle of the picture, create the contour of a mountain. Draw a small mountain range in the background of the left image.
Dampen the sky with the flat brush. Shade the sky with a rich mix of Prussian blue and black. Start from the top with a rich, dark tint. Work in more blue and water downwards. Always work horizontally. Let everything dry completely.
Do the mountains from back to front. Mix it with some phthalo blue, phthalo green and black. Dampen the mountains. Add colour at the top and allow it to run out downwards with very little paint. The rear mountains should be lighter and the front should have stronger colouring.
On the left mountain, hint at the pine tips with a jagged brush stroke and a stronger colour. Work diligently downwards and it quickly becomes lighter. Let everything dry completely.
For the next mountain (under the right one), dampen the lower right area of the image a lot. Now it’s time for the fir trees! Position the trees fir by fir, diagonally in the image, as practised. The colouring can be even stronger than before.
To make the front fir trees very dark, add a little phthalo green to the black and mix it with very little water to create a rich dark green. Now draw fir trees in different sizes on the lower edge of the picture. Let everything dry completely.
Now it’s time for the stars! Place different small dots in the sky with a white marker. Your mystical misty forest is ready.
