Deco letters in a ‚concrete look‘

Deco letters in a ‚concrete look‘
60 min Easy

Deco-letters in betonlook

Step-by-step tutorial

Roll out an approx. 3 cm thick sheet per letter from half a pack of FIMOair light white.

Tip:
When rolling out the FIMOair light block, place two wooden strips on the left and right-hand side, measuring 3 cm high, so as to create an even depth in the rolled-out FIMOair light block.

Cut out the paper letter template, moisten slightly and place on the sheet of FIMOair light. Use a scalpel or kitchen knife to etch the contours into the clay.

Remove the template and, starting at the top of each line, insert the rigid blade into the clay holding it vertically as you do so. Follow the contours and cut out the letter carefully. Repeat the procedure for the other letters and then leave everything to dry in the air.

Hardening:
Now leave the letters to dry in the air at room temperature for 1 day.

Once the letters have dried and are hard, you can sand over any unevenness with the sanding sponges. Small cracks and holes are intentional and are what give the letters their unmistakable concrete look.

Next, cover the letters in a coat of grey paint (e.g. Rayher‘s Chalky Finish in stone grey). To enhance the concrete effect still more, sprinkle a bit of sand over the paint while still wet and rub it in.

Knead the remaining FIMOair light together and use them to roll out a 1.5 cm thick sheet approx. 12 x 26 cm in size. This sheet is large enough for 2 letters. Use a new package for the 3 additional letters.

Tip:
Turn the two strips of wood onto their narrow side so they are approx. 1.5 cm high and place them to the left and right of the block of FIMOair light to help you roll out a uniformly thick sheet.

Cut out a circle approx. 11 cm Ø using a shaped cutter, cup or glass. Then cut the small letter templates out, moisten them slightly and position them on the circle of FIMOair light. Use a scalpel or kitchen knife to etch the contours into the clay.

Remove the template and, starting at the top of each line, insert the rigid blade into the clay holding it vertically as you do so. Follow the contours and cut out the letter carefully. The best way to do this is to cut out individual, small, square-shaped pieces, one at a time.

This leaves you with a negative of the letter in the centre of the circle. Once you‘ve finished cutting out the letter, make a hole for hanging in the middle at the top using a toothpick. Repeat the procedure for the other letters.

Hardening:
Now leave the letters to dry in the air at room temperature for 1 day.

Once the letters have dried/are hard, you can use sandpaper (120 grit) to smooth out any unevenness. Simply sand the surface using circular movements. Small cracks and holes are intentional and are what give the letters their unmistakable concrete look.

Straighten the inside of the letters using the flat side of the file. The round side is used to do the curves of the ‚S‘.

Finish off by painting the letters in different pastel colours (e.g. with Rayher‘s Chalky Finish paints). To enhance the concrete effect still more, sprinkle a bit of sand over the paint while still wet and rub it in with the brush. After hardening, thread a piece of white cotton thread through the hole and knot the ends together. The FIMOair light letters are so incredibly light they are ideal for hanging up and make really ‚sweet‘ window decorations!
