Step-by-step tutorial
Placing the Gold Leaf
Make sure your mould is clean, dry, and free of dust. Place it on a flat, even surface.
Start by tearing the gold leaf into small flakes. Using a brush, gently dab the pieces into the mould. Arrange the gold leaf however you like - spread it evenly, create fine lines, or cover just one half of the mould while leaving the other side plain.
Keep in mind that the bottom of the mould will later become the top of your piece. Don’t forget to place some gold leaf along the edges as well. It’s best to use slightly more gold leaf than you think you’ll need, as not all of it will remain visible - some pieces may float upward in the casting mixture.
Tip: Instead of laying the gold leaf completely flat, shape it into small flakes. This ensures it will be more visible in the final piece.
Mixing the FIMO Casting Powder
Mix the casting powder according to the package instructions, using a ratio of 3:1 (FIMO Casting Powder to water). Stir slowly and evenly for about one minute. The mixture should have a smooth, thick, and pourable consistency.

- Place your empty casting mould on a kitchen scale and tare the scale, including the mould, to 0 grams or milliliters.
- Then fill the mould with water up to the desired level.

Pouring
First, pour a very thin layer of the mixture into the mould - just enough to fix the gold leaf in place.
Wait briefly (about 20–30 seconds), then pour in the remaining mixture.
This initial thin layer helps prevent the gold leaf from floating or shifting.
Gently tap the mould with your fingers to release any trapped air bubbles so they can rise to the surface.
Curing
After about 30 minutes, the piece can be removed from the mould. Carefully take it out and place it on a wire rack to dry completely.
If you’d like to further refine your piece (sanding, varnishing, etc.), wait 24 hours until it is fully cured.
