FIMO leather-effect Gold leaf necklace & earrings
Make your very own necklace and earrings set – perfect for any evening out!
It’s easy to make and looks fantastic. FIMO leather-effect modelling clay has a similar look and feel to leather even after hardening. Designed for you to mix colours, create textures, cut, emboss, braid, pierce, sew and personalise!
For both: flatten ½ a block of FIMO leather-effect with a rolling pin to approximately 8mm in depth.
Use a tile or a piece of baking parchment on a baking tray as a work surface. Lay a sheet of Leaf Metal over the surface then smooth it down with your fingers.
For both: roll the FIMO with Leaf Metal in a clay machine on settings 1, 2, 3, and 4. Or, roll by hand with a rolling pin to a depth of 2mm. Enhance the leather-effect of the FIMO with a ‘Leather’ FIMO Texture Sheet. Then use a 5cm shaped cutter to make 2 matching shapes.
For both: gather up the left over FIMO with Metal Leaf from around the cut out shapes then roll it into a ball. Flatten the FIMO pieces with a rolling pin to a depth of 2mm, or in a clay machine on settings 1-4. This will disperse the metal leaf pieces for a more fragmented effect.
For both: roll out ½ a block in another FIMO leather-effect colour to a depth of 2mm, or in a clay machine on settings 1-4.
Enhance the leather-effect of both FIMO pieces with a ‘Leather’ FIMO Texture Sheet.
For the necklace: use a smaller 4cm cutter to make 2 matching shapes from the FIMO with the metal leaf flakes.
For the earrings: use a 4cm cutter and a larger 5cm cutter to make 2 pairs of matching shapes from the rolled FIMO in 2 colours.
For the necklace: cut a single 5cm shape for the middle of the necklace then place all 5 shapes onto a piece of baking parchment on a tile, or onto a piece of thick card.
For the earrings: Place all 6 shapes onto a piece of baking parchment on a tile, or onto a piece of thick card.
For the necklace: cut one more 4cm shape and fold it over. Press the ends together, leaving a space in middle where a chain can be threaded. Place the folded piece with the other FIMO shapes ready for baking.
For both: harden FIMO following the instructions on the packet.
Use an oven thermometer to check the temperature is consistently at 130°C for 30 minutes.
Allow FIMO to cool completely before handling.
For both: use fine sandpaper to smooth the edges of each shape. Seal the surface of the metallic shapes with FIMO Varnish for Leaf Metal. Leave to dry.
For the necklace: glue the 3 larger shapes together so they overlap then glue the 2 smaller shapes on either side.
For each earring: glue 2 shapes together so they overlap.
For safety, when using superglue wear disposable gloves, mask, and eye protection.
For the necklace: when the glue has dried, turn the leaves over. Glue the folded piece onto the back and thread a fine chain through the hole in the middle.
For the earrings: carefully make a hole through the top of each piece using a thick needle or a sharp tool.
Then glue the final FIMO leather-effect shape onto each earring, taking care not to cover the hole.
Fix jump rings and earring wires onto each piece. Close the ends with pliers to make sure they are secure.
- Use a cocktail stick to apply and spread small amounts of superglue onto FIMO leather-effect
- The surface of hardened FIMO leather-effect can be sealed with FIMO Varnish for Leaf Metal.
