DIY embroidery hoop with FIMO leather-effect
60 min Medium

With FIMO leather-effect you can mix the colours for your embroidery background yourself! This makes your DIY project even more special!
Embroidery has a long tradition - almost everyone still knows the embroidery needles from grandma. Now it‘s time to get the embroidery needles out of the cupboard, because embroidery is again a big trend! Normally, cotton and linen fabrics are embroidered. But you often don‘t find the colour you‘re looking for. So why not just make the background yourself? With FIMO leather-effect you can do it in the colour of your choice. For example, by kneading white FIMO into other FIMO colours, you get delicate pastel shades! Or you can‘t decide between two colours? Then how about a colour gradient? You can knead the different FIMO leathereffect colours together and create your own colour mix according to your preferences. There are no limits to your creativity: Patterns such as stripes or checks are also easy to create.

Step-by-step tutorial

Roll out one FIMO leather-effect block with the clay machine to the maximum thickness.

Tip: The leather-effect is even more striking if you gently move the FIMO leather-effect sheet again with your hands after rolling it out and pull it slightly apart.

From now on, you should work directly on baking paper so that you don‘t have to lift the FIMO sheet later and possibly destroy it.

Lay the FIMO sheet flat on the baking paper and make sure that there are no air bubbles under the sheet.

Now carefully place your embroidery hoop on top to measure out the right size. Cut a square with a knife that is a little larger than the hoop.

Now remove the excess from the work surface.

Now sketch your embroidery design on a piece of squared paper. Cut out the design and place the sheet of paper in the center of your FIMO sheet.

Gently go with your hands over it so that the paper adheres well to the FIMO. Now transfer your design onto the FIMO leather-effect sheet by pricking each corner of your marked squares once with the needle. This way you can see where to stitch later.

Tip: Work in progress and left-over material should be protected against sun and heat and can be stored in a screw-top jar or in cling film to protect it from dust and dirt.

Now carefully remove the paper template. If there are unsightly marks on the FIMO sheet, you can simply roll the acrylic roller over it again with gentle pressure until the marks have disappeared. Make sure that the pinholes are still clearly visible.

Now harden the FIMO sheet in the oven at 130 °C / 266° F top/bottom heat for 30 minutes.

Use an oven thermometer to check the temperature regularly. Let it cool down well afterwards.

Now remove the sheet from the work surface and place it in the embroidery hoop and attach it.

The FIMO leather-effect sheet is very flexible and can therefore be easily attached to the hoop.

Cut off the edges on the back.

Now you can start embroidering. Always use your pattern template as a guide.

Have fun embroidering!
