FIMO leather-effect - Woven hearts
Before you start, cut a card template. To make a 10.5cm cx 10.5cm woven heart, the template for each half needs to be 9cm x 6cm with a curve at one end. The 3 x strips are 7cm in length and, 2cm apart.
This shape can be scaled up or down for making bigger or smaller FIMO leather-effect heart decorations.
Roll the FIMO to make it bigger, approximately 15cm x 15cm, 2mm deep.
The FIMO sheet can be carefully lifted and pulled to stretch it out.
Fold the FIMO over to make a longer shape. Keep rolling until it is 1mm deep.
The FIMO needs to be very thinly rolled so the strips can be folded for weaving together the finished heart.
Make sure the rolled FIMO is at least double the size of the card template, plus at 1-2cm spare around all 4 sides - 20cm x 9cm, or slightly bigger.
Repeat steps 1-8 with another FIMO colour then carefully lift both pieces onto a baking tray lined with card.
Preheat the oven to 130°C / 266 °F (upper and lower heat). Once it is up to temperature, place your pieces in the oven and harden them for 30 minutes.
Leave to cool before handling.
Trim off any uneven edges from the hardened FIMO then place the template on top, positioned with the straight edge along the folded FIMO edge.
To make mark the position of strips, push a pointed tool through the card at the top of each line onto the FIMO.
Draw around the template with a thin pen then cut around the shape with the strips in the middle. Repeat with the matching FIMO piece.
Hold the 2 halves of the heart together. Thread the 2 top folded strips alternately pulling them through the facing strip. After threading the first layer, push the strips upwards before starting the next ones.
To make a handle to hang the heart, cut a thin strip from the left-over folded FIMO.
Punch a hole in the heart on both sides and at the ends of the strip then fix a rivet on both sides.
Optional – you could add a small hardened FIMO shape to your heart, or glue a stamped initial as a personalised detail.
- Try using different FIMO leather-effect colour combinations to make a selection of woven hearts.
- Keep your fingers clean with wet wipes so darker FIMO colours don’t transfer onto the lighter ones.
- Wipe and dry the tile before using a new FIMO colour.
- Placing FIMO on a piece of card on the baking tray helps to prevent the reverse side appearing shiny or patchy. Always keep card away from the edge of the oven or heated elements.
- For safety if you need to use glue, wear disposable gloves, a filter mask, and eye protection.
