FIMO leather-effect pattern guide: Create beautiful surfaces with a leather effect

With FIMO products, modelling and crafting is always a unique experience. The oven-hardening modelling clay with leather effect can be decorated with patterns before it is hardened. This enables you to easily create beautiful DIY accessories with the look of leather, or leather-like jewellery in a terrazzo look, for example. Unleash your own creativity: Whether with dots, stripes or stamped motifs – leather-like surfaces and patterns can be created in all shapes and colours, and can be designed just the way you want. The various possible surface designs are explained in more detail below:

Creating a dot pattern with FIMO modelling clay

An unhardened sheet of FIMO leather-effect can easily be decorated with dots. The pattern is applied before hardening: Simply roll out a thin cord of FIMO leather-effect and cut off little pieces with a knife. Roll the pieces into little balls and arrange them on the rolled out sheet of FIMO leather-effect as desired. Then cover the sheet with baking parchment and roll it flat with an acrylic roller. This presses the balls into the sheet, creating a beautiful dot pattern. The leather effect can then be enhanced by gently stretching the sheet.

Creating a striped pattern with leather effect

Creating stripes is similar to creating a dot pattern: First, roll out a sheet of FIMO leather-effect on which the stripes will be placed. Then roll out a second sheet and cut it into evenly sized strips. Now arrange the strips on the bottom sheet. Simply place baking parchment over the top and evenly press the strips into the bottom sheet with an acrylic roller. Gently stretch the modelling clay after rolling for an even more convincing leather effect. Embossing FIMO leather-effect

FIMO leather-effect: Embossing FIMO leather-effect

To emboss a pattern into FIMO leather-effect, you will need to start with an unhardened sheet of FIMO. Now you can emboss beautiful patterns using a variety of motif stamps. To do so, simply place the stamp on the unhardened sheet of FIMO leather-effect and, applying even pressure, press the pattern into the sheet with an acrylic roller. Any leftover edges can be removed using a FIMO knife. The decorated FIMO sheet is now ready for hardening.

Refining the leather effect with stamps

The surface of the modelling clay can easily be refined with stamps. You will need an unhardened sheet to start with again. Now simply select a stamp and press it onto the sheet of FIMO leather-effect. Any leftover edges can be neatly removed with a knife or cutter. The stamped sheet can now be hardened in the oven.

Beautiful accents and details can be achieved on hardened FIMO leather-effect using FIMO liquid. There are a few different ways of doing this: for example, you can apply lines, dots or similar shapes with the practical dispensing tip. You then need to harden the item once again. This creates a cool 3D effect. This application can also be seen in our creative tip for a notebook cover.

In addition, designs such as stamped letters can be applied. After hardening FIMO leather-effect, evenly fill in the grooves and wipe off the excess with a damp cloth. If the FIMO liquid colour escapes from the motif onto the FIMO, it can be removed with a damp cloth. However, some residue may remain. If the colour is spread evenly, it creates a beautiful patina effect. To finish, place your FIMO creation in the oven again to harden for 20 minutes at 130°C.
