The STAEDTLER Noris digital: Pencil on the outside – Digital on the inside

In collaboration with electronics manufacturer Samsung and technology specialists WACOM, long-established Nuremberg company STAEDTLER has presented its latest digital masterpiece at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) on 26th February in Barcelona. The STAEDTLER Noris digital is an adaptation of a traditional pencil, but has the cutting-edge technology of an S Pen. This ergonomic pencil, made from innovative WOPEX material, makes it comfortable and easy to use with digital devices.

STAEDTLER Noris digital for Samsung

If you need to record a sudden brainwave, make a quick sketch or sign a document, it’s often easier to write by hand than type on a digital device. Technology does have the advantage over paper-based approaches of being able to save what you’ve done as soon as you’ve produced it, and also of being able to share it with just one click. But many people find most smart writers just too technical and sterile, because they’re not anything like a traditional pen or pencil. The new STAEDTLER Noris digital, though, combines the best of both worlds. It is the first digital pencil with charm, the first to make writing and drawing on tablets, smartphones etc. creative again. The traditional stripes of the STAEDTLER Noris digital give it a look that recalls its beloved analogue ancestor, the Noris pencil. The smart pencil has a unique, specialised lead that is well suited both to writing and to creative drawing. This collaboration between stationery-expert STAEDTLER, Samsung and WACOM brings together three long-established and leading companies who are pooling their joint expertise in this new and innovative product. The Noris digital, which will be on the market in the second quarter of 2017, will be available in yellow and black or green and black.

Analogue and digital: two worlds, one vision

The pencil: we learnt to write with it, made imaginative drawings with it, took notes with it – and maybe even wrote our first love letter with it. But even tried and tested writing implements are not immune to the digital age. With the new STAEDTLER Noris digital, STAEDTLER therefore set itself the task of combining the charm of a high-quality analogue pencil with the innovative technology of the Samsung S Pen. This intelligent concept brings together the best of both worlds in a single product. “At STAEDTLER, we believe that analogue technologies, such as writing, drawing and crafting play a necessary and complimentary role in the digital world, “says Axel Marx, STAEDTLER Group CEO. “We see ourselves in a leading role to create and drive a balance between the Analogue and Digital. With the Noris digital STAEDTLER can build a bridge between these two worlds and revolutionize the pencil as we know it.” The use of innovative WOPEX for the shaft ensures a unique feel and makes it even more comfortable to write with. The STAEDTLER Noris digital is a real delight to use.

EMR technology for a natural writing experience

The key component of the STAEDTLER Noris digital is its innovative lead made by technology specialists WACOM. It uses electromagnetic resonance technology (EMR) to maximise writing comfort. The tablet creates an electromagnetic field that inductively interacts with the lead, so that the tablet always knows the exact location of the point of the pencil. The STAEDTLER Noris digital does not need a battery, and therefore does not need to be charged. It works with nearly all Samsung S Pen-compatible devices. A further plus point is that the pencil’s fine point is an adaptation of a traditional analogue writing implement. This enables not only highly accurate writing and drawing, but also provides the most natural writing experience possible. EMR technology also permits so-called palm rejection, namely the ability to ignore the presence of the palm on the device – to allow for a natural hand position for writing and enable trouble-free production of sketches and graphics. The interaction of the pencil with the device also enables line width to be adjusted by changing the angle of the pencil on the device – which makes the STAEDTLER Noris digital ideal for creative drawing or sketching delicate details. So creative types can unlock its full technological potential and work digitally.

Perfect through and through

The external features of the STAEDTLER Noris digital are also just right: the innovative WOPEX material casing around the EMR lead ensures a velvety yet non-slip feel and an excellent grip. WOPEX is made up of WPC, an innovative composite consisting mainly of wood. Granulates of all materials are processed in a specially developed production procedure, melted and then shaped into an endless pencil strand. This is then cooled prior to cutting to the appropriate pencil length. The density of the material means it weighs more than a classic pencil and therefore sits comfortably in the hand, making it ideal for writing, sketching and drawing.

STAEDTLER is one of the oldest industrial companies in Germany and ranks among the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of writing, colouring, drawing and creative products.
