Forest Management Project
In September 2000, STAEDTLER Malaysia, the Pahang Forestry Department and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia started a joint research project on the reforestation of jelutong.
An area in the vicinity of Kemasul, Pahang was found to offer the ideal platform for researching an effective method for the reforestation of and sustained growth of jelutong (dyera costulata), a soft wood which is especially suitable for the anufactureof wood-cased pencils. Half of the area is used for a monoculture plantation of jelutong. On the other half, jelutong seedlings are planted in a natural forest environment.
Phase one began as soon as the agreement had been signed and the land had been made available. It involved test plantings of theseedlings in line with research results from the Forest Research Institute.
Also, the Forestry Department designated a suitable forest area for the planting of more jelutong seedlings.
The growth of the seedlings is monitored constantly and observed results are carefully documented at regular intervals. A committee, made up of representatives from the Forestry Department, Forest Research Institute and STAEDTLER Malaysia, is responsible for the monitoring and further development of the project and for implementing any measures that may be necessary to secure the project's objectives.
Over the course of the past thirty-four months, impressive scientific results on the monoculture of jelutong and on reforestation have been complied. Both the jelutong plants on the plantation and in the natural forest environment are now thriving and displaying a healthy growth.

This project has not only succeeded in creating suitable conditions for a successful plantation, it has also enabled us to replenish valuable forest resources.
This, combined with the learning process gained from the overall experience, constitutes a milestone for future forestry projects in Malaysia.
